I personally don't check a movie unless I specifically remember seeing the entire thing. This can get frustrating when I know I've seen parts or even most of a movie on TV or something. But to me it only really counts if you've watched it beginning to end.
Great idea, I was always irritated by all those guys who automatically check an entire list they are not interested in instead of just hiding it, thus bypassing the people trying to legitimately achieve the goal.
In my book, the users who have platinum in a category filled with rare, hard to find movies are suspicious if their checking history doesn't substantiate those checks. Not sure how that might be translated into code, but there are probably some patterns that can be analyzed.
There are many movies with just 1 or 2 checks and I am always wondering how these people have been able to watch them. Maybe I'm just too suspicious but I would like to know.
In "One hundred film and one country, Italy" list I can not understand how two of us were able to see movies like "Prima comunione", "Città dolente", "La spiaggia", "Febbre di vivere", "Il sole neglio occhi" and few other titles... all of them with only 2 checks. Sorry but I'm italian and I know that these movies are not in DVD anywhere in the world, neither in Italy. Furthermore italian TV never shows these movies and anyway you should be able to understand the language.
Can we force users to leave a comment in order to check movies with less than 5 checks? They should help the other users and tell them how to find those movies and in what language.
Even though i hate cheaters, on icm i'm not really bothered by them. For me it's about completing lists for myself. But i can imagine some people who are really into the competitive aspect can get annoyed by this.
Some users check movies in order to clear their 'view' of what they still want to see. Why not have an option for the user to check whether they want their checking record to be included/excluded from the competitive nature of the site? Administrators could move trolls to the 'excluded' category.
And, really, this is a slippery slope. How many of us have checked Panavision movies which we've seen in truncated pan and scan? We literally missed 43% of these movies!
I'm sure quite a few people here watched plenty of films before DVD or VHS existed. So I don't think we should consider an unavailable DVD as proof of anything. Fake titles seem to be a good way to detect impulsive checkers, but they're easy to uncover: just follow their IMDb link. It's a tricky issue.
