It's a sad day for the users, but a happy one for Erik and Piet, and ultimately that's what's important. It would only be selfish of us to expect them to continue to devote so much time and energy to something that has gone from being a fun side-project to an increasingly demanding obligation.
When I first discovered this site (5 ½ years ago!), it was a dream come true. For a movie-buff with an OCD-enhanced love of lists, you couldn't do any better than iCM. Watching enough films on a certain list in order to earn an award became a constant mission, the completion of which was usually entertaining and always rewarding. iCM has been directly responsible for my discovery of countless cinematic gems, ranging from film-noir to spaghetti westerns (thanks to this list and this list, respectively), a feat for which I am eternally grateful.
Also, it should be noted that while the IMDB has become the most ubiquitous of the online movie databases, it is the Wal-Mart to iCM's mom and pop store - sure, it's bigger and flashier, but it's missing that homegrown, personal touch, and its size and popularity prevent it from being able to provide certain options or the same level of customer service. Heck, iCM has had some useful features for years that the IMDB still hasn't even hinted at implementing (such as the ability to import lists, for example). And when browsing on iCM, I always feel like I'm in the company of people just as passionate about film as I am, sort of how it used to feel when I was a kid, browsing the aisles of the local independent video rental shop.
To conclude this already overlong comment, I'll leave you with this fact: to this day, after watching a movie, the very first website I go to is iCheckMovies.com. I have no doubt that many others here do the same thing. That may not sound like a big deal, but if you really think about it - taking into consideration the ever-increasing number of choices and distractions (online and off), each constantly vying for our attention - it's a remarkable achievement.
Bottom line: iCM has made a significant impact on the lives of its users, something for which we are all thankful, and of which Erik, Piet and Marijn should be proud. Best wishes to the former 2 in all their endeavors, and to the latter in the continuing adventures of the site. If you're ever looking for beta/bug-testers (or any other voluntary assistance), I'd be more than happy to give something back to this great place.
Thanks for all of your hard work - your creation has been a central part of my life since I found you in 2011, and I hope to help out to keep things running. Best of luck.
Though it's sad to see two of The Guys leaving, I'm actually happy that Piet and Erik being honest and pursuing what their heart wants.
Thanks a lot Erik and Piet for all you have done and all the best for your future. And a bigger thanks to Marjin for feeling motivated and decided to continue working for the site.
Like everybody else, I just wanted to say thanks for your extensive work :) I'm really sorry to hear that you are leaving, but as the owner of a community website, I'm very familiar with the feeling of "fun becoming work". And when you get to that place, it's probably time to look for a new pastime :)
ICM has been an indispensable resource for my film hobby for several years, and I can't image that will change anytime soon.
As for you, Marijn, I can only hope and cross my fingers that you don't find anything better to do with your time :D Keep up the amazing work - it's really appreciated!
Very shocking news.. We users appreciate all of the hard work and hours you fellas have put into creating and maintaining this website over the years. I can easily say iCM is one of the few websites I visit (almost) daily. It has brought so many new films and directors into view that I most likely never would have discovered without this incredible website. Anyway, thanks for everything and wish you two the very best!
P.S. With only Marjin left, does this now mean there is solely "The Guy"?
It is always sad when founders leave. Erik and Piet have put in a lot of work into this site over the years and have managed to build a beautiful and useful place for film fans to check movies.
While I think we'd all love to see you continue, I don't think there's any point to it if the desire is no longer there.
Fortunately, Marijn is willing to continue the work and I guess it's time to see if this baby is now ready to move on with only one parent. Hopefully, people will have some patience as it's now a one-man operation.
To Erik and Piet: So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. Best of luck in your future endeavors!
Thanks Erik, Piet and Marijn for opening this wonderful world of unknown movie lists to me and others. thanks to ICM i became aware of movies i never knew existed wich gave me tremendous hours of viewing pleasure and broadened my movie horizon. Cheers.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Hopefully Marijn will get help from a few good contributors in order to run a tight ship, but I fear the day when this site turns into a ghost town.
Thanks to all your work, Erik and Piet, and Marijn, of course. You have already done a lot for all the film fanatics out there. You are leaving a legacy behind, and I hope Marijn soon finds a way to keep this alive and running.
I am not writing this comment just to be polite, iCM has literally been a life-changing experience for me personally, and I am pretty confident for a lot of other folks as well.
Thanks man for this website. It's haven for all the movie buff out there. I wish all the best to Erik and Piet for future endeavours. We are with you Marijn to support you and to wish more great things to come. :)
Also looking forward for the release of new website layout which is currently still in beta!

Thank you for all of the time and hard work you've put in on this site.As someone who's not active in the community, I appreciate all the work everyone puts in here.
I wish I had some talents I could offer, but I'll do my best not to take for granted the efforts being put in here by everyone.
