The Hunt for Red October

As you may recall, in the previous blog post the newly appointed moderators asked for input on what lists you'd like to see official. In early September they discussed the results of that poll and selected four lists for adoption.

Without further ado, here are the four lists that have been adopted:

• Inspired by TSPDT's building of a film canon through compilation of publicly available 'best of' lists, mightysparks has spent over a year building a similar canon just for the horror genre. Since October is a time many dedicate to horror, we thought it was an appropriate time to adopt They Shoot Zombies, Don't They? (adopted from mightysparks).
• Several years ago, UK's Channel 4 ran Mark Cousins' 15 hour documentary The Story of Film: An Odyssey, which became an instant hit among film buffs for it's detailed and engaging exploration of film history. The documentary itself may not (yet?) be on any official lists, but we felt the list of films it covered deserved to be. So we've adopted The Story of Film: An Odyssey (adopted from szaretrilby).
• While most of the 'big' countries have official lists, there remain many countries with rich cinematic histories which are not represented on iCheckMovies. This time around, we've decided to adopt Cine.gr's The Best of Greek Cinema (adopted from mjf314).
• We're always on the lookout for good lists for underrepresented genres. Patrick Galloway has written two well regarded books exploring Samurai films and after much discussion we felt they would make a good list for adoption, so we've adopted Patrick Galloway's guide to samurai films (adopted from mjf314).

If you missed the chance to offer your input, don't fret. You can PM PeacefulAnarchy with any suggestions, or, if you're willing to take a bit more time, rate the lists which are currently on our radar for adoption.

Selecting lists is not the only thing the moderators have been up to over the last few months. They've also been busy keeping lists up to date. Since it's easy to miss these updates if you don't follow a particular list, we felt it might be nice to highlight some of the more recent updates:

• iCM Forum's 500<400: This yearly poll at the unofficial iCM Forum has just concluded, resulting in many new entries and a new #1 film.
• 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die: The new edition has come out, resulting in ten additions from the past year.
• FOK! top 250: This yearly Dutch forum poll resulted in 44 new entries.
• Belgian Film Awards: In September N: The Madness of Reason was awarded the Vlaamse Filmprijs.
• Venice Film Festival - Golden Lion: In September Desde allá was awarded the Golden Lion.
• The Criterion Collection: As it does every month, The Criterion Collection announced it's next batch of titles at mid-month. This time it was three new titles for December.
• 366 Weird Movies (Certified Weird): Four new movies have been added last month.
• Best Of Rotten Tomatoes and All Time Box Office: Both of these lists are regularly updated.
