    Avant-Garde Film - Motion Studies

Favs/dislikes: 21:0. In this book, Scott MacDonald examines 15 of the most suggestive and useful avant-garde films. Through in-depth readings of these works, MacDonald takes viewers on a critical circumnavigation of the conventions of moviegoing as seen by filmmakers who have rebelled against the conventions. MacDonald's discussions do not merely analyze the films; they provide a useful, accessible, jargon-free critical apparatus for viewing avant-garde film, which communicates the author's pleasure in exploring "impenetrable" works with students and public audiences. The book is divided into three sections ("From Stern to Film", "Psychic Excursions" and "Premonitions of a Global Cinema") with five films in each section. ISBN: 978-0-521-38821-4

  8. CriterionForum Lists Project - 1920s (Version 3.0)'s icon

    CriterionForum Lists Project - 1920s (Version 3.0)

Favs/dislikes: 21:1. Every five years or so the film fans at Criterionforum.org spend half a year discussing the films of a certain decade - viewing and reviewing classics, championing favorites, and highlighting overlooked/underrated films. At the end of the discussion period they each submit lists of their fifty favorite films from the decade, and those lists are then compiled into a top 100, as well as a list of "also-rans" (the films which received more than one vote, but not enough to make the top 100.) This list includes both the top 100 and the "also-rans." These are the results of the poll conducted from June 2010 through January 2011.

    Dogme95

Favs/dislikes: 21:0. This is a list of all the films that have come out of the Dogme95-movement. I've used the list on the Danish wikipedia-article as source. Eight of the films are not registered on IMDb and is therefore not included in this list. These missing films are the reason for the wrong numbering from #27 and on.
The eight missing ones are as follows: Dogme # 27: Come Now (USA) Dogme # 36: Amateur Dramatics (Anja Laumann, England/Danmark) Dogme # 38: Mere Players (Vaun Monroe, USA) Dogme # 39: el ultimo lector (Sergio Marroquin, Mexico) Dogme # 40: Lazy Sunday Afternoons (Joe Martin, England) Dogme # 42: DarshaN (Travis Pearson, USA) Dogme # 43: 11:09 (Adam Wolf, USA) Dogme # 44: Jagten på det gode liv (Faaeteamet, Danmark)

    Ebert's Great Movies II

Favs/dislikes: 21:0. Below is a subset of Roger Ebert's list of great films containing only those in his book "The Great Movies II", published in 2005. Originally I only listed three full-length feature films in lieu of Ebert's "Buster Keaton" chapter, but I have since brought this list in line with the official iCheck version of Ebert's Great Movies. Now Buster's body of work "from 1920 to 1929" is represented by selections 18-49 below. An excerpt from Ebert's introduction to the book: "One of my delights in these books ... has been to include movies not often cited as 'great' ... We go to different movies for different reasons, and greatness comes in many forms."

Harvard University's Suggested Film Viewing List: Single-channel Video (2012)

Favs/dislikes: 21:0. This list is "an educational resource that offers guidance and encouragement as students seek to find points of orientation within the vast history of film and video." It is not a list of the best films of all time. Rather, it reflects a variety of criteria. The list is divided into 5 sections: I.
