  1. Amos Vogel's Film as a Subversive Art's icon

Amos Vogel's Film as a Subversive Art

Favs/dislikes: 193:12. "Film as a Subversive Art was first published in 1974. According to Vogel--founder of Cinema 16, North America's legendary film society--the book details the "accelerating worldwide trend toward a more liberated cinema, in which subjects and forms hitherto considered unthinkable or forbidden are boldly explored." So ahead of his time was Vogel that the ideas that he penned some 30 years ago are still relevant today, and readily accessible in this classic volume. Accompanied by over 300 rare film stills, Film as a Subversive Art analyzes how aesthetic, sexual, and ideological subversives use one of the most powerful art forms of our day to exchange or manipulate our conscious and unconscious, demystify visual taboos, destroy dated cinematic forms, and undermine existing value systems and institutions." This list contains all movies in the revised version from 2021. Included in this list are movies: 1. with dedicated texts. 2. shown in movie stills. 3. mentioned otherwise as an example of subversive cinema in the context of the text it is mentioned in. Excluded from this list are movies that are mentioned in any other way than an example of subversive cinema. The movies are sorted by appearance in the book. Some movies appear multiple times. In that case, the preferred position is the dedicated text, then a movie still and lastly a mention. The book is divided into parts: Introduction (#1 - #20) Part 1 - Weapons of Subversion: The Subversion of Form (#21 - #170) Part 2 - Weapons of Subversion: The Subversion of Content (#171 - #355) Part 3 - Weapons of Subversion: Forbidden Subjects of the Cinema (#356 - #572) Part 4 - Towards a New Consciousness (#573 - #598) #599 is the back cover.

    The Criterion Channel's Queersighted Series

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Queersighted is an ongoing series from The Criterion Channel which takes a look at film history through a distinctly queer lens. Series programmer Michael Koresky explains, "Queer cinema is not a genre. But there is a thread of queerness that runs through all of film history. I always find it really interesting to talk about film history in this way. There's just this coded, surreptitious language that queer viewers are very attuned to. Queersighted gives us a chance to look through film history and find these hidden messages." Currently, eight installments of Queersighted have been released. This list includes every film discussed as queer with the title, director's name, and year of release displayed. Queersighted #1: The Ache of Desire (1-8) Queersighted #2: Turn the Gaze Around (9-19) Queersighted #3: Queer Fear (20-30) Queersighted #4: Breaking Taboos (31-41) Queersighted #5: Class Acts (42-52) Queersighted #6: Stage to Screen (53-60) Queersighted #7: The Musical! Grand Prix - Belgian critics association

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. The Grand Prix is an award presented annually by the Belgian Film Critics Association, an organization of film critics from publications based in Brussels, Belgium. The Grand Prix was introduced in 1954 by the organizing committee to honor the "film that contributed the most to the enrichment and influence of cinema". In December of each year, the organization meets to vote for films released in the previous calendar year. To determine the nominations, ballots are sent in by the members – select knowledgeable film enthusiasts, academics, filmmakers, and journalists – and subsequently tabulated in order to decide the winner. Looking at some of the older entries, it's clear that back in those days the release date in some countries was years after the original release date.
