I absolutely understand how someone could passionately hate a movie like Fahrenheit 9/11 or the Twilight films, whether or not I agree with the haters. And we all know people who truly love those films. I understand the concept of "polarizing."

Something seems fishy, though, about a classic Laurel and Hardy comedy like The Music Box showing up here. (How offensive can you find Stan and Ollie moving a piano?)

It also seems strange that people could violently dislike films by the Lumières, or that there are enough people who hate Tex Avery or Chuck Jones cartoons for them to show up here.

Including the Lumière films, in particular, just seems embarrassing, since you could reasonably infer that a passionate Lumière dislike indicates hating film as an invention.

I took a look at the number of "favorites" versus "dislikes" for some of the titles I was surprised to see on your list:

Gerald McBoing-Boing - 47 - 6 (1,868 checks)
King-Size Canary - 59 - 8 (2,147 checks)
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown - 153 - 27 (5,972 checks)
Oliver Twist - 65 - 7 (2,947 checks)
Dr. No - 260 - 33 (11,717 checks)
James and the Giant Peach - 276 - 63 (11,085 checks)
A Bug's Life - 896 - 150 (50,550 checks)
The Black Stallion - 47 - 14 (2,268 checks)
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs - 803 - 99 (50,001 checks)
The Simpsons Movie - 991 - 354 (47,827 checks)
Pinocchio - 619 - 92 (40,944 checks)
L'arrivée d'un train à La Ciotat - 63 - 19 (3,762 checks)
La sortie des usines Lumière - 37 - 17 (3,192 checks)
Animal Farm - 101 - 35 (6,031 checks)
Charlotte's Web - 94 - 19 (7,368 checks)
Steamboat Willie - 80 - 12 (5,758 checks)
The Great Train Robbery - 110 - 10 (5,494 checks)

I'm with mjf314 in asking you to reconsider your criteria for this list. I don't see the "polarizing" of these titles above. There seems to be a generally favorable margin on my random choices.

For me to agree that a title is "polarizing," the numbers of faves and dislikes would have to be a lot closer to each other than these are.

I don't think that's a good formula because it favors movies that have a similar number of favorites and dislikes, but not necessarily a lot of them.

Maybe something like this would be better:
(favorites ^ (2/3) * dislikes ^ (1/3)) / (checks + 50)

You can use my iCM chart-reading program to get all the movies, but don't tell it to read everything because it'll take too long, just read the first ~200 pages of the most disliked movies. It'll generate a list of IMDb URLs, and then you can add it as an iCM list and export the list to get the counts. You can download the program from here:

Mostly because I'm not aware of an easy way to export ALL movies and their stats so I'm currently walking through the official top lists and exporting each one and then removing duplicates. If there is a giant 'export-all-the-things' link somewhere, i would gladly use it. Not sure icm would really want me doing that tho since then I could technically create a duplicate site (not that I would) ...

Why only official toplists?
