Its a loose definition. M is already on a bunch of lists, so Im fine if Detective Story or This Gun for Hire gets some recognition instead.
M is from 1931 and is German, while film noir is generally considered an American genre starting a little bit later. IMDb seems to have a "rubber band" like set of requirements that seem to rule out some films while considering others. Personally, I perfer the lists as narrow in scope as possible. Thats how you find the hidden gems.
perhaps instead of questioning whether pseudo-noir films everyone has seen from the last 10 (or hell, 45) years apply, people should use this list as a tool to catch up on some really terrific stuff from a great time in film. I prefer it having stringent requirements. Everyone's seen Chinatown. Its on a ton of lists on this site. I'm glad a movie like Brute Force or Kiss Me Deadly can get some exposure in its place.
I don't say they are wrong per se i say their definition is too broad. To define noir isn't easy at it is and when you add every movie with a dark mood that was made between 1930 and 1960 it gets extremely squishy. You have to keep in mind film noir is not a genre it's a style therefore it's perfectly reasonable to make the distinction between American and European films that share a similar theme and mood.
It's my personal opinion and i'm not alone with it. The guys over at TSPDT are film experts too and exactly how many foreign films are on their quintessential noir list? 2 out of 250.
I suggest you watch a couple more noirs and then make up your own mind instead of putting blindly all your trust in your lecturers judgement.
And nobody is questioning the European influence on noir. But that is written on a different page.
Wait...they just added a von Sternberg film from 1927 to the Film Noir list? That's not noir, man. Gangster film, very much so. Crime film, of course. But Noir? No.
