I absolutely adored the first two thirds of this movie. All four central characters are compelling in their own way, although most of the accolades will deservedly go to Ralph Fiennes, who delivers the best performance of the year thus far. If he's not at least in the discussion come Oscar time then it's either been a hell of a second half of the year or the Acadmey has missed a beat in a major way. The scenery is the other real star of the show, with director Luca Guadagnino not afraid to let his camera linger on the beautiful Italian landscape, forsaking brisk pacing for a melancholic, peaceful, and contemplative mood that reminded me of Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty. This makes the twist of the story in the final act all the more shocking and, while I appreciate the unpredictability and confidence, things kind of fell apart for me as the players weren't able to adequately capture the delicate shift in tone necessary to make a development like that work. Still one of the best films of 2016 however. 7 years 10 months ago
