A really bizarre movie that is all over the place in its themes and symbolism. Yet the photography is gorgeous, the characters are likable, and somehow it all works as a whole.dombrewer
A lovely eccentric film full of humourous quirks of character and details of 'Englishness'. Not in the top rank of Powell and Pressburger's films, lacking some of the dramatic edge of their classics, but perfect Sunday afternoon viewing nonetheless.Ebbywebby
So little plot for a film over two hours long, but I liked how the main characters each found a little note of salvation in the end. I totally agree with LiquidSplitter saying it was almost like a proto-Robert Altman film. Most unexpected reference to marijuana EVER.

Apparently, at the end of WWII there was so much not going on in England as to lead several officers in the military to become obsessively preoccupied with a so-called "Glue Man." For those of you unfamiliar with the concept (as I was), it is a person who puts glue in your hair and then runs away. Forget the Nazis! There are "Glue Men" running about! This was a great film, but somehow that main plot point doesn't . . . stick.

Starts off slow, but pays off enormously. Really charming.weirdboy
The last 30 minutes of this movie contain some of the most stunning cinematography I've seen. The tracking sequence where you see the cathedral in the background of the bombed-out streets could only have been made right after the war.ClassicLady
I really couldn't follow the plot of finding the "glue man" because I was so fascinated by the dialog and the delivery of the dialog by the actors. It was quirky, homespun, rightfully English, and just plain delightful.Neville
Beautifully English - about as far as you can go without becoming Jane Austen or George Eliot.LiquidSplitter
Maybe it's because I'm not British, but this movie seemed so pointless to me. It completely failed to hold my interest because of the lack of any meaningful story; like a microcosm of a Robert Altman film.CynInFlicks
I last saw this nearly 20 years ago and had forgotten most of it. Really splendid and exceptionally EnglishIvan0716
@KhazarExact opposite for me, I loved the first 30 mins or so, but then it somehow got less and less interesting.

Great Michael Powell film.acoltismypassport
I have to agree with Ivn0716. The first half hour, and perhaps a little more, was very entertaining; but it quickly took a drop and became really quite dull.
