I don't have too strong feelings about this but calling it a Crazy Rich Asians knockoff is like calling Sleepless in Seattle a When Harry Met Sally knockoff.
The two romantic comedies have nothing in common other than the fact that they both have an Asian cast. While Crazy Rich Asians focused on presenting a more non-American view of Asians, Always Be My Maybe captures the charm and struggles of growing up as a second-generation immigrant in the United States. The writing is clever and generous, giving every character their moments to shine and be funny without going into the obvious jokes, making people of color the butt of the jokes.

It's a typical cheesy romcom. Some of it is incredibly tropey and predictable, but some of the joke writing is real sharp, and the cinematography and acting are good.

In other words, the rom is okay, the com is great.

The two Keanu Reeves scenes really made this for me: I mean, that restaurant and that dinner. What a trip! Thought this was fun because the characters were interesting even if the romcom plot was, well, predictable at best but guess some find that comforting.

Also, after literally seeing at least a hundred productions set in San Francisco that are completely devoid of LGBTQ... characters (and allies, lol), at least they remembered who else lives by the bay.

Plot-wise, Always Be My Maybe doesn't stray very far from the tried (and tired?) and true romcom formula, aside from casting Asian leads (I find it ridiculous how progressive this still is for Western cinema). In fact, it's very Richard Curtis with the whole "can I love a celebrity and can a celebrity love a shlub like me?" element. But I'm not here for the plot. Romcom plots may have "com" in mind, but they're not, by themselves, funny. This movie has a lot of what I call stealth comedy, i.e. jokes you don't see coming, and that the actors and director don't lean hard into so you GET IT. A lot of chuckles around the room throughout, and at one point, I completely lost it for a good minute straight, and it's not any joke you probably remember. At its best, Maybe lampoons celeb culture (Keanu Reeves is having a great year) and trendy restaurants, which really tickled me, and while Randall Park isn't much of a singer - Ali Wong's character seems to think so, but I can't tell if it's her crush talking, or if the movie believes it - Hello Peril's (I JUST GOT THAT!!!) style grows on you, and here are a couple of very fun songs in there that should end up on my playlist.
