avatars story is not a great story, nor is it intriguing. but the visuals are beautiful to witness and offer some intrigue of their own, and the pacing is near perfect, not to mention that i've always been a fan of that calm before the massive storm plot device most often found in epics.
all the characters are rem'arkably forgettable, besides sigourney weavers well acted character who had a strange amount of impressive and some-what out of place development.
if visuals aren't your thing, then look elsewhere. but if you can look past this and enjoy avatar for the simple, epic blockbuster that it is, then you should definitely consider watching.
it is undeniably fun to watch. 6/10
This is one of those movies that I really love. I know a lot of people are complaining about the story's lack of originality but I liked the story. Of course the basic conflict is not new but that's true for lots of movies which were not so strongly criticized for this. I think there's a lot of truth in the story (still, no matter how often such stories are told) and the cast is great, even the smaller roles.
The visual impression was vast of course, I completely got lost in that colorful world and I very much appreciated the Performance Capturing for the Na'vi. There were colors, action, emotions and more - I did like the story and the movie as a whole and I hope the sequels are gonna be anywhere near that good.
Every cliché you've seen in movies fit into a single convenient film, brilliantly illustrated. Sort of like Van Gogh's "Starry Night" printed on the outside a Chinese take-out box with week-old barbecue pork.
Sure, the script isn't exactly the most original one out there and Sam Worthington's lead performance is kind of weak.
But this is still one of the most well-directed movies I've ever seen. Every element of this movie works in concert beautifully to create a cohesive viewing experience.
It's long and baggy at times, plot is incredibly boring and somewhat politically smug, the characters, acting and dialogue could have been tightened up big time, but it's visually mindboggling, and the first half is the most beautiful nature documentary I've ever seen, offsetting a lot of the sour taste of the rest,. Plus it's not completely without emotional impact, even in spite of the more cardboard elements. James Cameron and 'family movies' don't really gel. 6.5/10.
Amazing movie with stunning visuals. To those who criticize the plot and dialogue: Yes, they dwarfed in comparison to the art, but they were still years ahead of many other movies. Overall a great movie that definitely deserves a watch on the big screen.
As long as people are as stupid and selfish as they are now, movies with the same “clichés” will be made. The joke is on the petty critics—you are cliché, not the movie.
Fantastic visual effects... The story's been done to death but at least in this movie the ending wasn't a let-down, even if it was obvious. I liked it a lot.
