In a way I enjoyed this movie much more than On the road. It's more true. 10 years 2 months ago -

I'm a little confused as to why this hasn't garnered more attention. It's a Jack Kerouac story and it's scored by the Dessner brothers from The National, and if that doesn't get your attention then there's probably no helping you. The film acts as a sombre and melancholic epilogue to On The Road, with occasional bouts of beat but mostly a much more restrained and introspective tone. It works nicely, but just don't go in expecting more of the same. None of the actors do quite as well at capturing their respective characters as those in the On The Road movie (which I actually really enjoyed) did, but it still feels like returning home to old friends, which I guess is as much as you could hope for.
The film is shot beautifully but is over-reliant on fast-paced narration and a ridiculous amount of typewriter shots. This is no doubt an effort to seem faithful to the book, which is admirable, but I would have preferred the filmmakers to explore what makes film unique as a medium rather than trying to imitate the book. That being said, I enjoyed Big Sur. It's worth seeing just to spend more time with the characters you love, and because of the Dessner brothers' score, which is predictably spellbinding. The movie is much better than its current reception (or lack thereof) would have you believe, and is definitely worth a watch for any Kerouac fan. 10 years 6 months ago -
