Tim Allen is a very good TV actor, but does not have the charisma to carry a feature film. Even in GalaxyQuest, he's carried by his supporting cast, especially Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman. Here, he has only Rene Russo and Stanley Tucci, and it doesn't work.
If Robert Altman had suffered a severe stroke, then made a comedy, it might have turned out like Big Trouble. The film is ultimately let down by its reliance on Tim Allen as the lead, and by the plot of sneaking a bomb onto an airplane after 9/11. 6 years 11 months ago -
Siskoid
A large cast that includes a lot of fun cameos to boot see their characters intersect in a complicated plot surrounding a stolen nuke. Tim Allen makes an unusually effective hero and narrator to what amounts to complete lunacy, a sort of Snatch with the comedy dialed up. Rene Russo, Stanley Tucci, Dennis Farina, Janeane Garofalo, Tom Sizemore, Sofia Vergara, Jason Lee, Ben Foster and Zooey Deschanel as kids... Lots of recognizable faces in fun performances, many of them as the "stupid criminals" required of the genre. You're really never sure where this thing is going, but the ride proves more than random, with every little amusing bit becoming important somewhere down the line. 7 years 11 months ago -

it's kind of like if Robert Altman made a screwball comedy. I approve. 10 years 12 months ago
