A really good movie. Not for everyday, quite depressing, but also emotional.
It shows a very dark and hopeless side of Barcelona (or other big cities of the world), which is conveyed by the story of course but also by the dark visual style. I've been to Barcelona shortly after watching this and it is one of my favorite cities in the world - but it's important to see this other side as well.
The story is told in an interesting way. In the beginning you already get a glimpse of the end, some scenes seem very surreal, it's sometimes hard to tell what's real and what isn't. A couple of things were not entirely explained till the very end so it's possible for every viewer to have his own opinion on some issues (e.g. was this scene real or not, what did the dream/vision mean, how did this part of the story really end...) I like such movies that make you think and leave different options of interpretation. Wonderful.
And of course there cannot be enough praise for Javier Bardem. His performance was amazing. He really became that man, he conveyed every little emotion so well, he made me cry when he begged his daughter to remember him... incredible. One of the best actors I know.
The good thing with Inarritu's earlier work is how he can see the details from life and make others see it too. His films with many characters and sometimes more than one story gives the feeling of real life and get the audience relate it too their own lives. He is a true artist.
Perhaps the most convincing and moving death scene on celluloid I know. Bardem probably died a couple of times during rehearsals, it's that convincing! Love the camerawork as well. Innaritu is a master of making the very real seem very unreal.
I miss some connection between the scenes. If someone manages to cut some scenes and re-edit the whole movie, maybe it could become a nice movie. Please note: maybe.
Sorry, guys, but it seems to last about eight hours.
It is a very sad story, Bardem is amazing... but Biutiful still is a boring movie.

Bardem carried this movie all the way. Nice cinematography and good soundtrack, but a pointless script and a messy direction.nicolaskrizan
