The Coen Bros. first film serves as a template for everything that they make after. The inept faux-criminal, silence, a machine that turns material into base form, a damsel in distress, a farm field, staring at the ceiling, witty dialogue, large amounts of money that goes missing.

Stylish. Dark. Slow. Witty. Serious. Great.

Imagine how the child of Dan Hedaya and Frances McDormand must look like. That kid must have an impressive dimple in his chin.

I've now seen every one of their films, this one being the last I needed to accomplish that. What do I do now?

A great thriller made on the cheap. The Cohen Brothers' first film is moody and rich, and the characters are stupid not because they are badly written, but because this is really their character.

Like devilsadvocado, this was the last Coens movie I had to see. It definitely felt prototypical in a lot of ways, but I found the characters to be very superficial and one-dimensional, so I never got into the movie as much as their others. This was surprising, but it was still enjoyable.

I realise that this film is meant to be a 'modern classic', but it did nothing for me, I'm afraid. At least now I know...

Another Cohen brothers sickie movie. I really don't understand the fascination with these two. Their movies are violent, bloody, slow moving, dialog-less, and genuinely odd. Oh wait...that's what people love in movies today. Too bad I can't join them.
