After all the buzz about this movie I should have guessed that something was wrong.
A) First up it was paced just right, so I don't understand comments regarding "slow" or "boring". Also the acting was ok.
B) The story was tacky to degree that bordered onto kitsch - for long stretches this reminded me of semi-erotic online gay fan fiction...
C) After they had sex (about 2/3 into the movie) the dialogue became unbelievably cringy.
D) The boy character was painful to watch - yes we get the point you're trying to hammer home: he's mature for his age, reads a lot and is an "intellectual". Catcher in the Rye's Holden Caulfield is less bland xD

p.S.: Anybody that compares this to Lolita hasn't understood either of the two - he's 10 years older, get over it.

Go watch this movie:https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/la+vie+dadele/ , it is 3 hours but the pace, the character development, the story, the acting are 100 times better. I Hope this doesnt win Best Adapted Screenplay, give that to any move but his, I dont know why it is nominated for best picture. I dont get this movie, maybe it is a masterpiece, I dont get it

Hollywood really ruined this film! And the two American actors. I sympathise for the screenplay writer, he wrote a beautiful, slow film.

I'm in the minority when I say I didn't like this movie.
I thought Moonlight was one of the best 2016 had to offer. I absolutely loved it. So when I hear of another gay romance getting Oscar buzz, I'm optimistic. But when I hear the details of this romance, I'm skeptical.

Why was I skeptical? Because this idea of a romance between someone older and someone younger / inexperienced has happened before, in Woody Allen's Manhattan. And many have found this relationship offputting, which it is.

Now it's not because it's a gay romance. It's because it's a gay romance between a probably 30-something research assistant and a 17-year-old who admits himself that he knows nothing about life and love.

For this reason, I was unable to emotionally connect with the characters. On top of this, it's very slow-moving.

I usually don't like when audiences or critics condemn a movie because it's "long" "slow" and "boring", when it's actually taking it's time with character development.

But Call Me By Your Name really drags. And has a few too many sex scenes, even if it were a straight romance. Very very well-acted though. I think the best performance was not Chalamet but Armie Hammer.
