This is a enjoyable and competent superhero movie. Not a masterpiece, not horrible either.

That such a harmlessly fun superhero romp became yet another batteground for the culture wars just makes me tired of said wars.

The movie's feminist themes, anticipated by some folks, dreaded by other folks, are there more to show how Carol Danvers has true Heroic Spirit, and how she never gives up (as shown in a rather heartwarming montage), the same way you'd get in a Spider-Man movie with Parker as the determined hero, for instance.

In other words, it's basic Marvel fun, not a political treatise.

Honestly couldnt see what the hate was about. It's a fun movie with some jokes, a good story, interesting characters, and which expands the Marvel universe out of the Avengers time zone. It's not preachy and it's not provocative. And despite having a female lead, it can be enjoyed by anyone from any gender, and it has a positive message about not letting what others think of you get in the way of your dreams. A message any kid, boy or girl, can relate to, I'm sure.

Of all of the super powers you see in this movie, none was more impressive than the hairstylist who found a way to hide Jude Law's receding hairline.

The chemistry between Carol and Fury was really enjoyable! The humor was always appropriate and fitted the overall tone of the flick... I personally liked this movie a lot, also post-credit scenes were among the best in a while imho.

It was ok. Not bad, not great. Just alright, and that's perhaps the biggest problem. My main issue was that I never felt any tension. Captain Marvel is just too powerful to ever be defeated. It's the same problem Superman has. Just too perfect to ever be in danger, which kills the tension.

There's a music cue in this SO on the nose and cringeworthy that the only way it could've been worse is if the song had been "I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar". Imagine if Black Panther had had "Say It Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud" playing during the final scene.

In some ways, Captain Marvel is just another building block in the MCU saga that's leading to Endgame, and so despite its 90s musical vibes and tech (that's when I was a young man, so it all spoke to me), it is of a piece with the rest - some aspirational drama, some comedy, some tension, some action (not always as clear as I'd like it), links to the bigger arc, references for comic book fans, cool effects wizardry, plus in this case a cute kitty. Marvel formula or not, it still defies expectations with twists I wasn't expecting (perhaps created with comic book academics in mind). But what puts Captain Marvel over the top for me is that while it is a story about a woman coming into her own power, topical sexism is only an undercurrent. For the character, it's not about gender norms, but about being a (faulty) human in Kree society (but we know what the movie is really/also saying). Brie Larson is a more subtle actress than most in this kind of fare, coming off as quietly confident and easy to like, never using words when a facial expression will do. The movie is only weakened by having her turn into a CG avatar in the space battles because she eats up the screen otherwise.

A solid entry in the MCU franchise. There was a lot of internet buzz about this movie being feminist propaganda. There is definitely a feminist element here, but like the 90's references, it's understated and unintrusive. Captain Marvel is, first and foremost, a superhero movie, and a very good one at that.

The film starts off kind of rough: we're thrown into the action and it takes a while before the audience can figure out what's going on. At around the 20 minute mark things smooth out, and the film becomes enjoyable. Samuel L. Jackson makes a surprisingly effective costar and comedic foil to the stoic Brie Larson. The chemistry between them is superb. There's also a pretty interesting twist around the third act, and the climax ends up doing the whole "this is why we need superheros" thing almost as well as the first Avengers did. It's not the best entry in the MCU, but it's far from the worst.

There are certainly enough Marvel offerings at this point that it's hard to not judge one against the majority, and especially if it is yet another origin story. It's just another average Marvel superhero movie. A twist or two thrown in to keep things interesting and despite taking place in the 90's it certainly didn't dive in head first into being overly nostalgic. Just stunningly average.

Based on the level of hate I was expecting a lot of what I like to affectionately refer to as "agenda moments" but they weren't really there. Other than a brief suggestive comment from a male fighter pilot it wasn't the core part of the movie at all which was a nice surprise. The hate seems to stem from Brie Larson's activity off-screen which is not really the best way to judge a movie, particularly if your politics don't bleed over onto the celluloid.

This has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year but it will not be one of the best. Don’t get me wrong Captain Marvel is a good movie and an ever better superhero but it just doesn’t hold up to the expectations.
The movie is a tie in for the Marvel Universe in order for Avengers: End Game to make sense and being able to fully include the character. Alas, the movie feels like just that: a tie in.
Often the action feels rushed and more eager to explain how it fits into the overall Marvel story rather than the actual story of the heroin.
Captain Marvel is the answer to DC’s Wonder Woman. It is the first Marvel produced movie revolving primarily around a female hero….and it’s about time. But while the movie is certainly entertaining it isn’t what it should be: an example for teenage girls to stand up for themselves and take charge of their lives.
The character of Vers (Carol Danvers’ Kree name) feels more like a teenage girl than a soldier let alone a hero. Right from the beginning it is clear that this movie is not going easy on the comedy and is not going with the serious route they took with most Marvel characters.
Every time Brie Larson opened her mouth there is a quip or sarcastic reply coming out of it. Sure it is funny at first but it gets old very quickly.
Luckily Samuel L. Jackson provides a more serious element to the movie and his usual charm and unique acting style often provide comic relief in the right situations. His chemistry with Larson is flawless and it is a delight to watch these two act together.
Brie Larson is an extraordinary actress and I have rarely seen an actress or actor that can express so much with her face. The emotion she can convey with just a look or a simple tug of her eyebrow is astonishing and while the character often feels a little too quirky and over the top, Larson still delivers a very good performance.
One person deserving an honorable mention is Anette Bening. She has very little screen time but her performance is simply mesmerizing. Whenever she was on screen I was simply drawn to her. I don’t know why she hasn’t won an Oscar yet but I hope she will win one soon.
Another underrated actor, Ben Mendelsohn, here playing a Skrull named Talos, is as always terrific in his role. He has a rather serious role but whenever he is on screen it feels genuine and serious.
This also is one of the last movies that we get to see Stan Lee appear in.
If I am not mistaken it is his second to last cameo but it doesn’t take away from all the amazing characters he has created.
I have noticed that there are a lot of pop culture references in the movie and while they are not as extensive as in Ready Player One, they are very uncharacteristic for Marvel movies. I know the movie plays in the mid-ninetees but some explanations or demonstrations of common objects are just seem unnecessary.
When it comes to CGI, however, Marvel as always did a perfect job. Especially the cat called Goose (when you see the movie you know why the name is spot on) is a scene stealer.
The last twenty minutes of the movie are a prime example of perfect CGI and it is some of the finest CGI work I have ever seen.
Now while all that is nice there are a few things that bothered me about the movie.
Most of us know that the reason Fury summoned Carol in the Infinity War post credit scene is that she is the most powerful Avenger and probably their only chance of beating Thanos and reversing the snap. However while most of her powers are shown in the final act of the movie it is not clear how Captain Marvel could be of assistance in the quest to bring back the fallen heroes. (Spoilers ahead: I know she is supposed to be able to time travel but we never get to see that ability in the movie)
The second thing that bothered me is that the movie lacks imagination.
It is an origin story and while it is told in a different way there are some parts that just feel rushed. It is very obvious that Marvel wanted make this movie quickly so they could be up to speed when End Game finally hits the theaters.
I often had the impression that Marvel was so focused on making the final Avengers movie a worthy ending that they put a little less effort in this one and forgot how important the character is for the next phase.
As most Marvel movies this one also has post credit scenes. One is a mid-credit scene the other one comes after the very last word has faded from the screen.
Let me give you some advice.
The mid-credit scene is definitely worth waiting for and it directly ties into the end of Infinity War. The post-credit scene is a different story. It is supposed to be entertaining but trust me you will be disappointed and it is definitely not worth the wait.
The post credit scene (careful minor spoilers ahead) basically shows the cat, Goose, throw up the Tessaract.
In conclusion I can say that the movie is definitely worth watching.
But folks trust me when I say for this movie a 3D viewing is not necessary. There are only a few scenes that will actually work for 3D but they are not worth the extra money. So stick to 2D. You will have a good time and have saved a few bucks.
Captain Marvel is a movie that fits in the Marvel Universe and that was due for a long time. It is an entertaining movie and while, like Infinity War it lacks a little edge, it still is worth watching.
If you enjoy superhero movies or simply if you are the Marvel fan this movie is a must see but even you aren’t into that kind of thing you still will have a good time.
In the end I want to thank the late Stan Lee for making a decade of superhero movies possible and introducing all these amazing characters into our lives.

Enjoyable enough but not really up to the usual MCU standard.

Didn't really need to be made, still not really sure why they did it, even if I loved all the call backs.
