I was really impressed. Da Palma builds up an incredible amount of tension leading up to the inevitable climax.
Only the ending, with Carrie's home being literally sucked into hell, spoiled what I would otherwise consider to be a perfect horror film. I found it a little much; kind of a cheap ending after what preceded it.
It's a little flabby, but not dated. Carrie retains its power today, nostalgic period aesthetic intact and effective (in spite of a few poor funk numbers in the soundtrack). Fueled by the occult primal force of the womb, Spacek's emotive performance is heartbreaking, propelled like an out-of-control train that won't stop for repression. She's aided by strong support, a fine musical score, a respect for the gothic roots of the genre, and a palpable control of image, tension, pacing and cinematic beats. DePalma coldly weaves the threads of schoolyard and underworld together like a stalking predator, hand on leash until the lurid blood spattered climax, leaving us with no illusions as to the exacting ruthlessness of human nature, or of the vengeance of the feminine. There's no reassurance here: red, red everywhere...
A film that remains possibly my favorite horror film of all time, though I'll admit to not being a horror fan. Even so, the 70s are definitely my favorite era for the genre. They knew how to create a disturbing atmosphere in those days, which works for me a lot better than disgusting gore or leap-out-of-the-dark frights. Plus, Carrie is ABOUT something. It's about the anxieties of growing up and discovering one's sexuality, and Brian Da Palma does a lot with the theme. And what about that cast? Sissy Spacek's creepy Carrie is supported by the awesome Piper Laurie (strange to see how charming she is in interviews, when I mostly know her for strange roles), John Travolta, Robocop's partner, Sloane's wife and the Greatest American Hero! Most in their first major appearance
The first time I watched it I felt disappointed, but now that I've seen the other two movies only copying the original and watchting it again, I appreciate it more. Also I really liked the music, probably I noticed it more after watching the other two movies having a completely generic soundtrack.
