I really enjoyed the first half of the film, and Holland and Ridley are great it in. But then the film tries too hard to condense a long and brilliant book into just a few scenes (that were not in the book) before it ends very abruptly. Even so, I would still love to see the whole trilogy.
There’s not really much going on in the movie to the point that it does get a tad boring in parts. It’s a very straightforward story, albeit a pointless one, that doesn’t answer half the questions it creates.
Alien planet but next to no alien fauna, and we see just one alien who is basically shown to remind you that this is definitely not Earth, even if it looks identical to Earth.
Can’t fault Tom and Mads phenomenal acting but the script just isn’t there. It’s not helped but the forever wooden Daisy Ridley, stinking up every scene she’s in.
The real fault of the movie is that it’s never really explains why the men caused the atrocities that they did, they obviously thought they were right, so why not get them to explain their side of it. I’m not saying they were right, but a whole town taking one side, well that should have been discussed.
Overall this movie will be forgotten by the end of the year and Tom will definitely be distancing himself from it.
I wouldn't exactly recommend it but I don't really understand the scathing reviews and box office bombing.
Now I haven't read the source material, but seems to me that I just watched a space western with a quality cast giving decent performances in an interesting concept that was well filmed and wasn't a carbon copy of something i've watched before. That alone in itself warrants an above average rating.
There's plenty to be critical of, it wasn't great but it certainly wasn't terrible.
