Bette Davis is so young and adorable here, although she suffers from a terminal disease. Humphrey Bogart should appear more! Note the soundtrack: "Oh give me time to tenderness"
Melodrama so heavy that the last twenty minutes or so are unintentionally hilarious. The best stuff is untamed alcoholic Betty Davis (who really is amazing here) rebelling against her mortality and embracing ennui— but sadly all the romantic stuff takes the movie into more conventional (and conservative) terrain. Also funny is the fact that sending Ann away at the end (because “no-one” should be there) confirms that these characters see their servants as non-persons (Margaret is literally “no-one” so she can stay). Ah, the glamorous 30s.

Bette Davis' acting is quite good, but on the whole the film is really predictable and mediocre.Public Enemy
