I didn't really enjoy it. I know it was influential and quite important especially for maybe having the first twist ending in film but I just found it quite average and boring, not the best from the 20's. I much preferred the likes of Metropolis, Faust and The Phantom Carriage.

So far the only silent films I've seen have been Metropolis, The Navigator, and now this. This one is my favorite so far.

A brilliant movie, tense and surreal it really does a great job of telling the story. One of the best movies ever.

More of a post WWI German art film than a horror film. Using sets and makeup in the style of German Expressionism, it seeks to illustrate the hallucinatory madness of a man who believes that the director of an asylum is the vengeful Dr Caligari with his hypnotized slave Cesare to kill people at will. The movie is important because it is the first acknowledged art film and had influenced so many filmmakers (Orson Welles, Burton, etc) The film is not my favorite but I can understand why it is so loved.
