The first time I saw this in my film studies class, I struggled getting into it and almost fell asleep. But then, after having a seminar on it, where we discussed the topics, the storytelling style and how every creative decision here is filled with meaning, I saw it again by myself. And the second time I fell in love with it. I even cried a couple of times. I think - at least in my case - that this is a film where it is worth doing some research beforehand and knowing a little bit about what you're about to see (which is the opposite of how I usually like to enter a film world), like the culture, history and traditions of the Gullah people. But for this beautiful and powerful film, it is worth the extra effort.

I just couldn't get into it. I prefer a Les Blank documentary about that Gullah guys.

A wondrous, dreamlike, lyrical exploration of a Gullah family a century ago, and the pressures they faced dealing with tradition and the outside world. You feel the emotion as they wrestle with each other's views and the gaps between generations, and see how displaced people created a new life for themselves in a new land. 8.5/10, would recommend.

Horrendous soundtrack, very bizarre rhythms and editing choices, beautiful locations and a very interesting setting. Some performances are just plain bad-- the climactic speech by Eula is excruciating and seems to go on forever. Hard to take. Too earnest. Didn't hate the movie, but wouldn't recommend it.

Indeed a very good movie, beautiful and poetic. By the way: I am not Afro neither American.

Long ad for a whatever Afro-American group. When cinema flatters the good conscience of America.
