The way the powers that be use human frailty against the people they want to oppress— sexual panic and jealousy and greed— so that they forget about the fact that they’re being manipulated into doing exactly what they want. Who is “they”? The Devil, I guess. Or government, in general. Or the Polish communist government, in particular. Zulawski’s points are never that deep. They’re like his movies: truthful, blunt, hysteric. I liked it a lot. It's as insane as the protagonist. But I don’t know if I would call Diabel a "beautiful film"… maybe if you explain it with some dance moves…?
