A highly over-looked film that deserves more recognition. Visually, dramatically, and emotionally, this film has it all. Give it a try and you might be surprised. Young Christian Bale gives a phenomenal performance.

Great cinematography & direction, moving story and a truly great performance by young Christian Bale! My absolutely favorite movie by Spielberg.

This film is incredibly underrated. It's quite easily among Spielberg's two or three best films, and it's one of the best depictions of childhood in wartime. It's also surprisingly emotionally and intellectually complex.

Not everything Spielberg touched in the 80s remains gold in today's light (e.g. The Color Purple) but EotS should be counted as one of his timeless works. An incredibly moving story with performances that never veer into being schmaltzy as most melodramas from that time period do.

Bale nailed his performance of what we label these days as a "high-spirited child." I'm the father of one so I would know. Bale was so authentic in his portrayal, I can only deduce that either he was actually a high-spirited child himself, or Spielberg was the father of one and knew exactly how to direct him.

The only letdown for me was the underwhelming final scene.

Very underrated!!!!!!! Never did like it that much as a 16 year old when i first saw it on release. Watched it again for the first time in at least 25 years and was very moved. Great and powerfull movie as long as you can get over the annoying kid. Bale is terrific and his transformtion throughout the movie is great.

It's not the best production and far from the best movies I've watched, but it is a must see for those who like movies based on the WWII.

Wow I just remembered that I had watched this a long time ago and decided to look it up on this site. I definitely am surprised that it is not on more toplists as well.

A real tearjerker. I sympathize so intensely with lost children. This one, because of its wonderful cinematography, strikes so hard at the heart.

Spielberg's coming-of-age drama for a young Christian Bale, during the Japanese invasion of China in WWII. 7/10.
