Nice social message, Bergman kills it- as you'd expect, and Giulietta Masina's little role is a treat. My enjoyment was hindered by that irritating trope of early 50's cinema: a completely illogical justice system that serves solely to be antagonistic. Bugged the hell out of me. 11 years ago -

At times the movie reminded me (stylistically) of von Sternberg's Dietrich: The Scarlet Empress (1934), Shanghai Express (1932).
