What Gainax have done here is fantastic. They could have made another version of Evangelion and screw it all up, but instead they just changed some details that makes everything much different; and when you're dealing with such a good series like "Evangelion" that's difficult. In my opinion they did a terrific job. I'll wait patiently for the 3rd part.

But the changes are kind of refreshing, I was thinking a complete remake but it's completely different, the character's motives and actions thankfully remain intact.

The main gripe I have with this series (and movies) is that they don't explore most of the interesting themes that could be addressed with the premise. They do very little world-building and (inter)national politics, The question of killing angels and the origin of the Eva's and those consequences. It's such a shame because they created a very interesting world and engaging (albeit a bit cartoonish) Characters.

With Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, Anno starts to take the story in different directions, in small ways (Rei not taking Asuka's slap) and large ones (that would be telling), with a better integration of smaller comedic and character/world building moments than in 1.0. I hardly ever felt like I was watching the series redrawn. As badass as Asuka's entry into the film is, the introduction of new EVA pilots also helps shake things up. We're still deep in mech-fighting mode and the spectacle is gorgeous, with a most apocalyptic mood throughout, not just because of the destruction, but also what's happening in the kids' lives. If I resent anything about 2.0, it's that they back-peddle from the truly shocking "oh no they didn't!" moments. On the one hand, I don't want them to have gone so far; on the other, the cheat takes away from the power of the moment. Judging from Ritsuko's Biblical speech at the end, I have a feeling things are about to get DENSE.

I did like how this deviated from the plot of series much more than the first film. That said, they removed a lot of the really rewarding character development and personal relationship stuff from the series, leaving essentially a lot of r/im14andthisisdeep-level pseudointellectual wankery and honestly pretty incredible battle scenes.

I'm not sure how convincing the CGI was 10 years ago, but boy howdy does it look awful in 2019. I get that they needed to keep costs down, but I would have preferred the classic anime approach of using less movement in scenes to the PS2-tier CGI on display.

Really not a fan of the wildly problematic fan service using 14-year old kids that they felt it was absolutely necessary to leave in despite having a much shorter runtime to work with.

P.S. To the user who thought this was a Gainax prod, it's not. Studio Khara made this one. Gainax was only tangentially involved, as a lot of folks who worked on the original series also worked on this.

path one was pretty much ok, but here is where everything turns to shit. the pointless new pilot, asuka gets a new NAME (!?), fucking bullshit. don´t watch this but instead go for the original series or the manga.
