Something like half of the movie is Eastwood 's character either scowling, grimacing, or looking genuinely PO'd at something, and it's utterly hilarious. Not Eastwood's finest performance in front of or behind the camera but it's still well made and great fun.

Essentially Unforgiven in the suburbs, Clint Eastwood stars and directs himself as a grouchy, racist old widower besieged by the Asian community that has taken over his neighborhood. He becomes a hero to them after standing up to their homegrown gangbangers and forges a friendship with his immediate neighbors... There's really nothing here we've never seen before, either as a plot or in Eastwood's other characters. Okay, except perhaps the climax, which makes interesting use of white privilege, but again, isn't actually surprising. And then we're right back into cheesy movie clichés. The Hmong characters don't fare all that well, largely played by non (or new) actors, which lends some authenticity, but can make some scenes heavy-going. And the exposition! Ugh! I make it sound like it's terrible. It isn't. It's just okay and has lots of problems on almost every level. Which is why I'm a little outraged.

Didn't expect to like this as much as I did. Clint is great. Didn't know where it was going so that's always good. One of those film's that keeps you on edge throughout.

Clint's performance was great.! But Theo's and the Girl's were terrible. The grandma and the mom were better...

8/10.

I agree, the acting of the other cast members isn't really 'all that'. But I enjoyed the movie, nice pace, good story.

Eastwood is fairly good in this but the rest is pretty crap. Watching "Theo" "act" made me almost want to turn it of. A very mediocre movie...

Also in America todayspoiler

woouw! i wasnt expecting this. after watching Unforgiven, i thought i couldnt watch eastwood movies, but now i see it's not because of him but because of western movies.
Anyway, i utterly admired it and fall for the soundtrack at the end.***1972 Gran Torino***

i agree about some of the asian actors not being fully convincing, still a really good movie. and i'm already looking forward to the ron swanson remake.
