What ever happened to movies with intelligent humor?

If you think of the movie as a thursday night "I need to just shut off my brain for a couple of hours and watch a dumb but entertaining movie" this movie is perfect. It's got some catchy phrases, a light story, some good space action, silly references to other movies, etc.

But if you're looking for a well-written, well-performed sci-fi movie, this is definitely not the one.

None of the characters were very well-written, and tbh the character who was most interesting and who was easiest to sympathize with was Groot, despiteonly having three words to say.
Several times, we came close to a deeper meaning to some of the other characters, but just as something was about to be revealed (spoiler), some (I'm sorry) stupid catchy phrase was said and we moved on.

Only the main story line was finished. The few side stories that were introduced, were never finished, and even the main storyline was predictable from second one.

I did find myself smiling and laughing at times, but the farther towards the end of the movie, the more I found myself yawning and getting annoyed at the stupid writing and repetitive action scenes.

I truly had hoped for more in this movie, especially considering how high it's rating is, but I must say I am truly disappointed.

I love superheroes, I love Sci-Fi, I love action and I love Marvel, but this film just doesn't do it for me. Because most of all, I do love well written movies with intelligent stories, characters and humor.

I guess it is time to reconsider using IMDB's Top 250 list as a reference for good movies...
But I will have to give this movie another chance in a few months, sometimes the mood you're in before watching the movie, affects your opinion!

I loved this movie. After Captn MURICA 2 this is a real change. Don't get me wrong, I loved Captn MURICA too, it is just tonally very different. Where Catpn had a more subtle meaning and took a stance on a very real problem in todays society, this was nothing more than meager fun. And there is nothing wrong with that.

I felt like every character was fleshed out. With the exception of Gamora. I didn't care for her. But the rest really got a chance to explain their motivations, and develop their character. Everyone got a moment to shine. I felt like the comedy was top notch. I have seen it 3 times and I laughed just as much each time. The soundtrack is also great. Just love it when they impliment pop songs into the movie like this. Kinda gave me a Tarantino vibe.

Only thing I do not think works with this movie is the bad guy. I have NO idea why he wanted to destroy that planet. Of course, they had limited time, and introducing an entire team of five people, giving each their time to shine, and fitting in a big end battle probably doesn't give room for a fleshed out bad guy. But I feel like that was the biggest flaw of the movie. That isn't something restricted only to this Marvel movie, though. Thor 2 and Captn MURICA 1 also were highly affected by this.

Brilliant. Films like this are the reason I still go to the movies - at $20 a ticket, I need a GOOD reason. Funny, action packed and with a great soundtrack.

Got reluctantly dragged to the threatre to watch this by friends. Expecting another run of the mill clapped out superhero flick, instead I had the most fun 2 cinematic hours of 2014. Dare I say it there were even faint echoes of the old (good) Star Wars movies. Witty, fun, with likeable characters, full of energy and doesn't take itself at all seriously - this is how a blockbuster should be.

Seriously, give me another Guardians movie before 5 of those tedious Avengers / Thor / Hulk etc

KuroSawWhat said it before me. GotG is a rehash of previous Marvel films under the guise of being something fresh.

Hilarious movie, with great actors and great music. The plot was a little bit confusing, but the characters are so interesting and funny it doesn't really matter. It very much feels like a Marvel movie the whole way through, but I thought it was very honest and heart-felt. The actors are very comfortable in their role and very believable - especially Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. I had a lot of fun watching it. Best summer movie.

This movie is average. The best part was the baby Groot scene ...

4/10 And it´s because of the CGI and the baby Groot.

This is the funniest Marvel movie ever.
The best movie of the summer no doubt.
Chris Pratt is the star of a movie alongside James Gunn.
