decent... but Disney tried a little hard to turn Hercules into Superman
True. They should have stuck to the myth and made him a rape baby who ends up slaughtering his whole family and dying an agonising death.
One thing that always bugs me about this and many other media involving Greek mythology is they use all the Greek God names but call Hercules by his Roman name instead of the Greek Heracles.
Disney's Hercules certainly suffers from some terrible CGI elements (a problem with a lot of 90s animation), but is not an unpleasant mix of elements from the Hercules legends, as put in a blender and spit out into a story that can be told for an all-ages audience (with shades of Superman). So the twelve labors happen, but not as part of a plot dedicated to them, and so on. Instead, the thru-line is a young man's journey to learn what it means to be a hero, something that goes beyond racking up glory through deeds, while the evil Hades tries to destroy him. Nothing too surprising, but effective. The animation is nicely inspired by Ancient Greek art, with a strong Loony Tunes streak to make the cartoony action beats palatable for the kids, though Hercules himself is too gooey and elastic; it bothered me. The songs are good, and the use of Muses as an R&B group is probably the best idea on show. I remember the film not getting a whole lot of traction back in 1997, and wondered if it was an underrated gem, but I think it was fairly rated at the time.
Siskoid's commenst here sums up the film quite well. I put it on the lower-tier of Disney animation as all the energy and creativity that the film opens with kind of peters out towards the end. Disney has made worse animated films, but I would categorize this as a missed opportunity.
One of the weaker entries in the Disney animated classic canon. Still very enjoyable though and fine disney film that children will take to heart. Has a little less substance for older viewers though, which Disney usually do so well.
Just a though, but this came right off the heels of the Centennial Games in Atlanta, so the folks at Disney might have had a thought to combine Ancient Greece with the soul and swing of American South gospel. It was a good idea to run with a current trend, but it didn't work out for me now.
Saw this in the Leicester Square Odeon when it was released. Felt fairly neutral at the end - though there is one excellent scene with the hydra if I recall.
Bad. Ancient Greece is littered with Americana, songs are bland and the villain is turned into a bad stand-up comedian. Adults are advised to stay away, but children will probably have a good time.
