The concept is brilliant and quite well handled, but the central mystery is poor and predictable. Overuse of flashbacks slow the film down a bit as well. Worth watching for some of the imagery and amusing situations but it's pretty average overall.
Horns has a premise I am definitely interested in, but doesn't quite deliver on its promises. Based on Joe Hill's novel, this is the story of Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) demonized after being wrongfully accused on murdering his girlfriend, and I choose that word carefully, because it actually does turn him into a horned devil and gives him certain powers related to exposing and using people's sins, which he uses to solve the murder himself. What starts out as the blackest of comedies with delicious magic realism thrown in eventually loses steam, in part because of extended flashbacks, but mostly because it devolves into slasher territory thanks to a thinly drawn villain right out of a Scream sequel. Worse, perhaps, the movie never really makes clear just how the devil metaphor works, despite early suggestions that Ig's been making monkey's paw trades all his life. Tonally, it's a bit of a mess, moving back and forth from epic romance to Amblin horror to caustic comedy to CW murder mystery without so much as a by-your-leave. I'm disappointed because I like movies with unusual premises, but Radcliffe is still good at least.
Maybe a little melodramatic in parts, but otherwise a very entertaining way to spend two hours. I think it could have gone a little crazier, but that may be because the concept itself is so over the top in the first place.
While not a huge masterpiece, it's actually a very good movie with hidden metaphora working as a crime thriller, horror movie and partly as a black comedy.
Being a good movie, it's undoubtedly the best Aja to date.
What a fuckin pathetic piece of shit movie!! The book was such a magnificent piece of literature, had sooo much depth and those dumb incompetent amateuristic cock sucking piece of shit script writers raped the story. Lee was supposed to be a calculating manipulative smart psychopath, losing an eye instead of fingers, but they turned him into a douche with no depth at all!! Lee was so smart into book, practically outsmarting the devil and almost beating him while being just human. There were also specific rules as to how the powers of the horns worked, and they just used a few cool tricks the horns can do and left out how they truly work. So many other scenes that were perfect for the movie were twisted into this garbage. I can't even fuckin believe it. No fuckin way the author thinks this movie is good.
I found this movie to be average at best, and that's being generous. In my opinion, this movie fits into the (lately popular) "different for attention" category - it tries too hard to be unique, and lacks any content that is actually enjoyable as a result.
Don't get me wrong, I was intrigued a few times, and enjoyed the ending, but overall it was just so-so. The movie also got a lot of hype, and while I didn't go in expecting much, it certainly fell short of that hype.
Kudos for being unique, but points taken away for succeeding at that, and that alone.
