Originally produced with a mammoth running time of 27 hours, making it possibly the longest film ever produced. It was never exhibited in its entirety. Instead, it was split up and released as 18 features between 1928 and 1931, of which Burning of the Red Lotus Monastery is one.

This movie was adapted from a newspaper serial (Strange Tales of the Adventurer in the Wild Country) and released in 18 feature-length parts over a period of 3 years (1928-31). In its entirety it would be 27 hours long.
