Wendy Hiller is pretty great in I Know Where I'm Going, a British film where she plays a woman who's always known what she wanted and found a way to get it. Except this time, Scotland may have other ideas. See, she's got into her head to marry a rich industrialist who's renting up there, and it's all been arranged. Now if only she can keep herself from changing her mind once in-country, especially after she meets the charming laird of the island. For the most part, it's a showcase for the Scottish locations and Scottish culture, all quite charming. But the film also plays with useful motifs, in particular legends surrounding dangerous whirlpools (fairly well executed on the physical plane) as they relate to Hiller's dilemma, and a crucial curse on the laird's abandoned castle. The stuff with the falconer's escaped bird also adds to the film's thematic resonance. A bit of comedy, a bit of drama, a bit of romance, a bit of danger, a weird dream sequence, a lot of good writing and staging... I'm sold.

If you hear about this film, you will know if it sounds interesting or not once you hear the plot. If you don't find that interesting, go no further as you won't be going in with the right attitude. The setting is so different to many, but the themes are universal. So original. Now an all time favourite.

By all accounts, this is an assembly line romantic comedy, but any elevation of the material is due to Pressburger's tight script and Powell's inventive directing.

I really had high exceptions for this one, it's a criterion release, in 9 top lists and it has a good rating but it disappointed me.

Without mentioning that I've seen really good movies before for Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger and Wendy Hiller!

I sensed this was not my sort of movie going into it and, boy, it was even less interesting than I imagined. What a dull, unappealing couple to worry about falling in love for no observable reason. A must for Prince Charles and Camilla swooners, if there are any. There was a secondary actress named Pamela Brown who had far more charisma than either lead -- I wish the movie had been about her. The best reason for me to watch was simply the surprise of seeing Petula Clark in a minor role, looking about 12 years old. Never would have recognized her, if I hadn't read the credits beforehand.
