One of the great Westerns. An epic about 3 ‘characters’ looking for a lost treasure. Great story structure and set pieces highlight this film. Also a legendary score. Eli Wallach is great in this as is his character. Interesting Civil War backdrop also highlight the film.

A step down in narrative from the previous two, but still so downright original and very well-made.

Terrific, exciting, funny western. GREAT stuff, besides James Bond movies, one of the ultimate father son movies you watch together

Damn, what can I say? I LOVE this movie!

I can really understand when others feel it as too long, but man the introduction of the main characters, the score, the setting, cinematography (close-ups and total shots)... you could write essays about it.
But to cut a long story short, there is one scene - in my opinion maybe the best in film history - keeping it to the point.

Let's just enjoy:

My all time favorite western. It's long but everything we love about westerns is here in force. The movie revolves perfectly around the three main characters but Tuco I think somehow managed to steal the show. His character is one of the grittiest, dirtiest, despicable characters in any movie yet he rides that fine line between being an interesting character without making you hate him as a villain. The soundtrack is golden, the filming locations are golden, and we even get a rich serving of gunfighting and explosions to boot.

Anybody else see that massive chunk of debris fly past the actors with the bridge explosion? Bloody hell...

The Good:
-Ennio Morricone's score
-the entire cemetery scene
-tension building
-emotional payoffs
-the last 40 minutes
-transitions (specifically the one into the cemetery)
-Eli Wallach
-character introductions
-balance between each character's story

The Bad:
-Clint Eastwood's acting
-Lee Van Cleef disappears for too long

The Ugly:
-dubbing
-Lee Van Cleef's missing finger

Sergio Leone as director, Ennio Morricone as composer and Clint Eastwood as lone wolf...perfect combination!

A great, if somewhat long western that features iconic western archetypes whose paths cross in their quest for treasure, a quest that also intersects the American Civil War. The latter provides an epic backdrop to the story, as well as a sense that these western icons are simply floating through a geography of fiction and history, commenting on these events from the inside. It's not about historical accuracy. It's about the Old West as mythology. Such an icon of a film that many parts of it - the music especially - will seem familiar the first time you see it; that's to be expected. And yet, it surprised me at every turn, right up to the highly visual showdown between the three characters. I realize I'm seeing Leone's big western cycle in reverse (my first was Once Upon a Time in the West), but so be it. I'll discover the earlier Dollars films in due course.

Did not feel like a 2hr 40min movie. Something great in every scene and couldn't see where it was going, so interesting right up to the finale.

Slows a little towards the end but otherwise fantastic and I chuckled at the dubbing.

Wonderful old movie - great actors, amazing music of course, good fun and action. Some scenes are just so hilarious :) and the characters are unique and absolutely fascinating. Furthermore, the film plays really well with sound and silence. So great!
