A beautiful but very talkative classic drama in the 1860s Sicily. Martin Scorsese: "One of the movies I live by". On 18 official movie toplists (!).
You know, we can hide somewhere in the corner with the camera and film pretty stuff and people talking that builds to nothing really. When you make 3 hours long film, you better have something actually engaging. Do not hype something undeserving, people.
Beautifully rich cinematography. Lush interiors and perfect exteriors. The Italian countryside comes to life on screen. It was a little long for my liking but every minute was a feast. I had a hard time following the plot but each scene was wonderfully acted.
Beautiful cinematography and great history about Italian unification, being Don Fabrizio Salina a Prince of a really small Island in the poor Sicily region.. Brilliant!
Visconti's attention to detail pays off with this extravagantly gorgeous epic. The production design and cinematography are close to perfection.
I did feel its length, however. I don't believe this needed to be three hours long. Some smart editing choices could've been made to considerably trim down the film without compromising its tone and spirit.

deckard.
the influences on godfather are very visible in the grand ballet scene, sicilian visuals and burt lancester's performance.i still cannot understand how a barechested hollywood action hunk portrayed a 19th century's aging italian prince this much soulfully and elegantly.
after leone's casting henry fonda as a villain, this may be the 2nd hollywood actor in a european movie that really floored me and left me in awe.
an influental movie with a unique performance.

Nevertheless, it's highly recommended.
