Story wise - a lot better than the recent one. Even the experience felt knew. The template, direction was different from your regular action movie. I thought I was going to love it. But, it had some unnecessary action sequences which looked like they were there just to show the heroism. The recent Jack Reacher , from the beginning, I knew I shouldn't expect much and it was less pretentious and felt quick. This one, at some points it felt like it was trying hard to be different . Nevertheless, it is a new experience in action genre for me and seems like Tom Cruise swiftly, smoothly beating up people is now my guilty pleasure.
I've heard Tom Cruise is physically miscast as Jack Reacher in the film, but having never even heard of the books before this movie came out, it doesn't really bother me. Truth be told, Cruise gets to some really cool martial arts, quick, brutal and realistic, in the film, and sells the character's physicality fine. Reacher is a former military investigator, now something of a drifter who comes out of the shadows to get justice where justice is impossible, something of a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Batman, and in this particular picture, gets involved in a conspiracy hidden in what looks like a mad public shooting. It's good stuff. A good mystery, good action, fine characters, but most of all, a splendidly smart hero who's always thinking, even in the heat of battle. I'd watch a sequel.
After a sniper takes out 5 victims, Jack Reacher, a former army man and an ace investigator, arrives at the scene to work on the case and expose the actual criminals and their motives.
One James Barr is set-up and taken into police custody and Jack, along with lawyer Helen, goes about collecting the required data and evidence to nab the perpetrators.
A mighty interesting watch thanks to the intelligence in the investigation process and of course the presence of the perennially charming Tom Cruise and the sexy, beautiful Rosamund Pike.
But Tom appeared too goody and decent to pass off as this badass army man who can win a brawl even when outnumbered and outmatched physically. Jason Statham would have been the best fit for this role.
While Jack Reacher stays within a standard range for a thriller (giving it a bit of a potboiler feel), it is nonetheless surprisingly compelling to watch and has a great script. There are a few over-the-top one liners and moments that border on melodrama, but overall, the film had me gripped from the start.
Better than expected, very enjoyable action with a bit of thought as well. It works well and entertains plenty.
Some things were incomprehensibly stupid,
like the bathtub fight, the phonetrolling, the sudden urge to drink the bad guy's blood from a boot, every woman JR even looks at seems ready to suck his c*ck at any given moment... lol
We get the complete spiel in the beginning, explaining who JR is and what he's done, yet some of the things he does feels completely out-of-character. Maybe I need to read the books... but this is a movie. The very first JR movie none the less! It should not need its viewers to study the books before viewing.
Tom Cruise just has that "it". He is compulsively watchable, and elevates serviceable films like this into great entertainment. Also, the ensemble does well, and I was surprised to see Werner Herzog, in a delightfully enigmatic and chilling performance. Worth a watch.
sort of disappointing with the script. could have been a great entertaining movie with the right director and script writer. here they even failed to capitalize on the actors skills even. Remake please!
Another example of bad marketing. They marketed it as an action film but while watching it, I realized it was more of a great example of modern noir. Then I started enjoying it even more.
If you think Tom Cruise is unrealistic as a tough guy, stay away from classic noir films. Many are filled with that sort of stuff.

Hated Tom Cruise in this; he is too short by a foot and too weak to be Reacher, who can beat up 6 bad guys without breaking a sweat.frankqb

Half decent action thriller with "mystery" elements. Last act is kinda disappointing even for the genre.MrDoog
Haha @nawi Considering he is supposed to be a big tough powerhouse of a man, 5'6 / 5'7 is a midget. The only way he'd be drinking anyone's blood from a boot is by biting at their ankles
