How the HELL does this have so few checks? I've just rewatched it and it is light years ahead of its time.

As good as anything that came out last year. Full of awesome songs, visuals and characters.

Essential for animation lovers.

Really loved this one growing up, and still do. The animation still sticks with you, really makes me wish that this genre was more explored. I can still remember the chills that I used to get from the pirate ship sequence.

Not very faithful to the book, but few Roald Dahl movies are. I don't understand why it's a musical.

I didn't see this when it first came out so there's no nostalgia for me (even then I would have been too old to consider it a film from my youth) and it was sadly disappointing when I finally did catch it. It always feels like a very thin plot stretched to feature length and the songs in particular really feel superfluous -none of them are memorable. The voice work is good though - Callow and Sarandon especially are great as the aristocratic grasshopper and sexy French spider and David Thewlis is good fun too as a northern earthworm. Joanna Lumley is wonderful as a particularly unpleasant Aunt in the non-animated sections, as is the late great Pete Postlethwaite. You have to cut the young lad playing James some slack as he was clearly very young at the time, but he's not a particularly convincing lead, speech impediment and all. Fine for the very young, but otherwise a very average animated adventure.
