Astounding achievement in filmmaking! Exploring themes of tradition and modernism, nature and technology, individuality/conformity, superstition/reason, etc. Imamura delved into the depths of human nature, ultimately revealing how quickly most people are to conform to the rules and conduct governed in society, and or otherwise to become outcasts. A brilliant film with highly thought-provoking content and beautiful cinematography...ranks among the finest use of color in the 1960s. A shame it's not wider known. 7 years 9 months ago -

Believing blindly or believing in nothing. There must be something in between. The last half hour or so is among Imamura's best work and that's saying a lot. He is a genius of the grotesque; a poet of the sweaty truths that hide behind our masks of reason and humanity; a man in touch with his inner beast. Great film. 2 years 4 months ago
