I must admit I watched this movie in three etappes, as some sort of wicked series. And I must say I kinda liked it in the end. There is some erotic tension, and Alexandre is just funny in that he talks random bullshit the whole time. A firstclass fuckup, he somehow reminded me of The Big Lebowski, although such a statement will probably anger a lot of people. The story kinda flows like a slow river, without too much happening. Also, Bernadette Lafont is HOT!

Red flags: The MovieUnEnfantPerdu
I usually dislike wordy talk a lot films aka Before Sunset and Claire's Knee. But this in spite of the terrible subtitles in the version I watched I think that this is a masterpiece. How absolutely detrimental each character is to each other something to behold. Say what you like greenhorg about anyone who enjoys this movie your a Seinfeld fan. How douchey is that (as well as the word douchey).fonz
One of the most irritating films I have ever seen. No character is sympathetic and found myself checking the time constantly as each scene dragged. I don't want to single out Jean-Pierre Léaud but perhaps he was the biggest reason I didn't like it. His Alexandre is far more irritating than all the characters Ben Stiller has played for the past dozen years combined. He acts like a prick the whole time and still gets all the girls in the end.It seems that people rate this so highly because of its length and they want to show of their ability to sit through a slog of a film for nearly four hours. If that is the case, be impressed by my ability to sit through 12+ hours of a single work in one day (I probably only enjoyed that one because it gradually chipped away my defenses).

I wonder if french people really spoke like that in the 70's of if it's just bad acting ;)george4mon
i would have liked it if it was 2 hours shorter and the characters didn't speak so much meaningless crap.Shingwauk
So dull and boring.nicolaskrizan
irritating, exhausting, irresistiblemightysparks
Indeed, Greenhorg. Also, is there some law that Jean-Pierre Léaud has to play a boring douchebag in every film he's in? The first time I saw him I thought he had a nice face, but now all I want to do is punch it.

There is a catch 22 in liking this movie: Either you like it because you are genuinely charmed or entertained by Alexandre's 4 hour douche monologue, in which case you yourself are a douche (congrats).OR...
You like it in a manner somewhat like Roger Ebert: for the "opportunity" to gawk smugly at Alexandre's douchy-ness, in which case you are a fool for suffering foolishness (Mr. T pities you heartily). Ebert's "ironic" appreciation of Alexandre (and by extension, the movie) is just as nonsensical as his interpretation of the women who love him:
"I think [the movie] is just as much about the women, and about the way that women can let a man talk endlessly about himself while they regard him like a specimen of aberrant behavior. Women keep a man like Alexandre around, I suspect, out of curiosity about what new idiocy he will next exhibit."

Yes, this makes perfect sense: Women have sex with (and jealously fixate on) men like this, because they think these men are "idiotic".
Between the lines translation: "I'm ashamed to admit I like this movie for the same reason the women in the movie like Alexandre: because he is interesting to listen to."
And you are right to feel ashamed for that, Mr. Ebert.
