This movie is magic. Not only do you want to cry over the delicate and horrifying subject matter but the film has an epic air about it, something which reminds me of a film like 'Gone with the Wind.'

Benigni was excellent. This was a beautiful film. The portrayal of love is at its absolute best.

Amazing, amazing movie.
Just because it's a war film doesn't mean it has to be about crimes or about real history events.

It can be a love story too.

I enjoyed the second hour much much more than the first. The first half just felt like unfunny Mr.Bean sketches and I had no idea where the film was going and if that was going to be it for 2 hours.

There ARE clear hints in the first half of what is to come (various Nazi salutes), but the film really picks up in the second hour. It doesn't try to be funny here, but really goes for emotion. Knowing what is happening around the little boy but not seeing it helps us, the audience, buy into the film.

If this had been a 90 minute film based solely around the second half I would have enjoyed it a lot more. I wouldn't recommend to a friend, and felt myself checking the clock a lot.

However, I can see why it is seen as a classic and why other people love it.

[I was a little distracted as on my copy I couldn't turn off the subtitles, and the whole film was dubbed anyway, but this didn't effect the viewing too much.]

@VChile: The Jewish barber character in The Great Dictator did end up in a concentration camp, though he escaped pretty quickly.
