A strong cast (Alec Guinness, Jack Hawkins, Muriel Pavlow and cameos from Gordon Jackson, Geoffrey Keen and others) struggle with an extremely anaemic script of what should have been a gripping true story of the defence of Malta. It's still watchable but lacks fully rounded characters and decent dialogue, and the end is strong although telegraphed heavily from the start. The best thing though are the battle re-enactments and stock footage which are spectacular - the shots of spitfires strafing German destroyers and crossing Valletta harbour are beautiful and awe-inspiring. Great history, average film. 11 years 8 months ago
