A perfectly constructed short movie - capturing a real sense of dream logic through its surrealistic touches. Very impressive indeed.idjutt
Absolutely brilliant piece of surrealism.Withnail33
creepy, mysterious, imaginative, brilliant :)thesearethethoughts
One of the greatest experimental and surreal films of all time, directed by a woman, in 1943 (!!!!), and all that people can come up to talk about is David Lynch. Please, let’s talk about the extraordinary Maya Deren! She was a groundbreaking artist and David Lynch had nothing to do with it.Alias
This thing is fucking creepy! Pretty good, though.Shidan
I've just watched it and it's amazing, I already want to watch it again. One very curious thing that happened to me is that I watched the silent version, but a couple of times I created a sound effect in my mind that matches what was happening, probably because I was really immense in it.jooeeri
the youtube link from xondar (mod-edit: refers to a removed post, dead link) has an added modern soundtrack. the original can be found at archivehttps://archive.org/details/Meshes_Of_The_Afternoon_Maya_Deren

If someone told me that David Lynch went back in time, posing as Alexander Hackenschmied, to make this film, I'd have a difficult time arguing the point based on its cinematic qualities.sixteenmiles
It's nice to be able to say that a film really made you 'feel' something on an emotional level. Less nice to say that those emotions were 'confusion', 'boredom' even 'frustration'.All conventional narrative disappears in Meshes of the Afternoon and we are left in a world of unreal dream logic. This 'idea' has been done so well in films that came long after this one. The inspiration that David Lynch must have taken from this film is dripping from everything he ever made.
Still, there is only so much fun in digging to understand the narrative before it becomes hard work.

Weird one. It's like a nightmare where David Lynch orders you to hit a wok pan with a spatula while peeling a banana with your penis. Doesn't really make much sense, does it?MovieDearest
