Women are empowered in this film - they are not speaking in a lower voice in front of men. Except for the priest himself, who represents church and God more than a male. (But then, why only men can become priests?)
A beautiful church bell, shots of misery, talks about charity and nice interiors. Didn't know it was a Buñuel before watching it, but I could have suspected it with the field-workers, who expel Nazario when he starts working for food instead of salary.
(Oh, this is one of Tarkovski's ten favorite films of all time.)
