Miss Oyu is one of two films by Mizoguchi from the 50s not on an official list on ICM (the other one is The Lady from Musashino). It is also not considered one of this best which I think is very strange since I loved it. It is breathtakingly filmed! I have the Masters of Cinema DVD and it is flawless. It is interesting to compare this film with his film from the 40s, like The 47 Ronin. One can see how Mizoguchi has grown as a film maker. The framing and timing serve the story perfectly. I loved the story and thought it was beautifully executed. Now I have not read the book and can't say if it lives up to it, and frankly I don't care. A film is a film and this film is great! And, yes this is another pearl about the plight of women!
