Before Ben Whishaw was in "Skyfall" and "Cloud Atlas," he appeared in "Perfume." The story is engrossing and strange, Whishaw's performance is phenomenal, and the film is so beautiful to look at. Just when you think you've seen it all, the ridiculous finale comes in. And it works. Goddammit, I loved every second of this film.

Seemed to me like they couldn't figure out how to end it, so they just let it trickle down to nothing.

Contrary to most comments I had not liked the book very much. I found some passages very nice, like when they described this world of smells and stuff... but apart from that I did not like the written style much nor some too excessive portrayals of this character's sick qualities. Plus, although I normally like "evil" characters and find it easy to feel for them or see their side as well, I could not connect to the main character in "Perfume" at all.

So I was not really motivated to see the movie, but I finally did - and especially after watching it a second time it appeals to me much more than the book. One great achievement is to make any movie at all that is almost exclusively about smells - it's a lot easier to write about that than to make it visible on film; but in my opinion it worked very well.

Additionally, many scenes are very visually attractive because of all the colorful things and scenes that are meant to represent smells. Of course, Ben Wishaw performed really well in the main role and Alan Rickman was good as always.

This was my favorite book and when I saw this movie I was deeply dissapointed.
In my opinion, a very bad interpretation of the book.

chemosh - That sounds more like a good percentage of modern American indie (and mainstream) films.

Besides the fact that this film was directed and produced by Germans, stars American and English actors, and is in English. Part of it was filmed in France (as well as Spain and Germany,) but it's still not a French film.

Not saying it's bad but it starts out like many other French films start out as. Eventually it stops doing that style and gets better.
