What a third act. It's a really quiet movie where more emotion is expressed in characters' actions and facial expressions than dialogue.

Vicky Krieps and Daniel Day-Lewis portray the most fascinating relationship I've seen in a long time.

The production design and costume design are incredible to look at.

A stunningly mature effort from Paul Thomas Anderson 9.5/10

This is the cinematic embodiment of the expression "if looks could kill." Stunning film and incredible performances by Day-Lewis, Krieps and Manville.

A well-made, well-acted film in which every character is thoroughly hateable.

A truly cinematic experience. Hits a lot of emotions throughout; sort of crescendoing in a way and the tones are bouncing around very nicely and subtly and sometimes even on top of one another. Some breathtaking cinematography that captures some amazing performances. Great music as well a for anyone who has an eye for this sort of thing the continuity between shots was nearly flawless in this.

''What precisely is the nature of my game?''
Good question, PTA. It seems to me that this entire film is an ironic sendup of genre clichés and conventions that also manages to blend in some profound dramatic moments that reflect on the weird toxic dynamics that exist within relationships (albeit on steroids, but that is what makes PTA's cinema and this one in particular so baroque). It's constantly balancing on the borderline between parody and deadly seriousness, each strangly reinforcing the other. It exists in a realm of indulgent playfulness that borders on masturbatory. I find it maddeningly annoying yet very alluring. I appreciate PTA's return to ambiguous filmmaking that manages to be interesting and not horrendously boring (Inherent Vice is a truly horrific piece of work)

Because he made my favorite movie ever (Magnolia), I'm rather loyal to director Paul Thomas Anderson. However, I have to admit that I respect his other movies, but I do not love them. His latest, Phantom Thread, easily falls under this heading. It's the story of an elite, post-war dressmaker, a genius who seeks to control every detail, but meets his match in his newest live-in model/muse, a woman who may not be controllable, quite the opposite. What unfolds, very slowly and deliberately, is a psychological portrait of a man who effectively needs to need someone but seems to need no one, showing Oedipal yearnings and anxieties (a psychological trope I never find engaging, which is part of my problem with the film), and the women who love and understand him. As one might expect from PTA, his is a detailed, textured and ambiguous world, but in this case, one that comes across as a little long.

PORTENTOUS - done in a pompously or overly solemn manner so as to impress.

brilliantly acted, but the whole film has a vein of portentousness. i'm afraid i think it was shallow and lacking in humanity.

i'm gonna watch Late Spring to remind myself of how it should be done.

...I just don't really have the patience for this boo-hoo heterosexual shenanigans. Therapy and divorce would have been, um, smarter options.

I wonder how Maya Rudolph feels? That her partner states that her taking care of him is the inspiration for this film, but in his art, her presence has transformed into this toxic-as-fuck relationship with a spoiled man and his mother-implant doll that he can dress up?? Maybe they're into kinky stuff, I don't know.
