Taut, no-nonsense sci-fi action which has just the right amount of characterisation and plot development to keep you engaged. The action sequences aren't all that memorable. What you're really coming for, though, are the one-liners, the undeniable charisma of the movie leads and the many thrilling segments.
Compared to many an 80s action flick, this has aged really well.
I hadn't since it came out, and well, it was pretty much as I remembered it. Neither better nor worse. Why the ambivalence? At the time, Predator was Aliens' poorer cousin. The character of the alien in this film hints at some culture and society that is not present in the Alien films, but that's a matter for the comics writers etc. to come. I just don't care for the style of action where the big hero comes in and shoots up the place. Machine gun fire is just so boring to me now. Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers are pretty much exactly as I remember them. The character I really love though is the one played by Bill Duke. Now that guy's awesome.
Phenomenal 80s action horror. Exciting setup - then runs faster than Usain Bolt on a coke binge to a thrilling finale. Great lines, great performance from Arnie, and most of all, Alan Silvestri's scintillanting score (running out of superlatives).
They don't make them anymore like they made them in the 80's.
Arnold in top form, over-the-top action machine gun craziness, fun characters and memorable one-liners make this the perfect film to watch with good friends on a Friday night.
For an action movie, I find this movie to be remarkably slow-paced. Slow-pace can be fine, but I find it rather unjustified in this film because the suspense is just not there.
