This obscure Japanese film was for some reason on the in-flight entertainment on a recent flight, so I gave it a watch. It's actually pretty decent; it evoked more of an emotional response than Skyfall, the other movie I watched on the flight.
The setting is 2017. The Japanese government has created a database of genetic information (this is the "platinum data") to help solve crimes. The movie is a character-centered mystery-thriller type (in particular, it's not a dystopic tale about government abuse of power, which was my assumption when I saw the premise). It's centered around a homicide detective (who is viewed as obsolete in the face of this new technology) and the creator of the genetic database. I don't want to give much away, so perhaps I'll leave it at that.
I enjoyed the film. It's not a masterpiece, but it's decent to watch. I think the 5.8 on IMDB is too low; I'd give it maybe a 7.0 or so. 10 years 11 months ago
