Wow, I am surprised that so many people like this movie... It was well made, but not a true Hitchcock - it is too close of adaptation of the book, which is engrossing, a fun read, but... I find the dumb female protagonist really annoying, as well as the patronizing Max de Winter. I guess, at this point method acting hadn't made it to the US yet... Still, nowhere as good as Rear Window, Psycho, et al...
I find this film a little frustrating. The characters are written a poorly to allow for plot twists, there are more than a few holes in the plot, and of course the weak female lead doesn't do it any favors. I feel that the acting is good and the cinematography is brilliant, but the whole thing came off a bit too contrived to me.
It might be a fairly long film but Hitchcock does a spectacular job of crafting the atmosphere so it flies by at a great pace. This is one of those films where you can literally feel the crackle of the static electricity in the air. It's unnerving and the tone is rather spooky and stuffy. Joan Fontaine gives a great performance as a fish-out-of-the-water maiden of the house with Olivier giving one of his best performances. The chemistry (or strained chemistry I should say) between them is incredibly tangible.

Rebecca, literally unforgettable!everyonewantstolaugh
Very enjoyable! I found Joan Fontaine's acting a little strange in some scenes, but overall Rebecca is a great Hitchcock film and worthy of its fame.seithscott
