The problem with this movie is that when we hear it was written by Diablo Cody we expect something that would shock the most open-minded people. Instead, we get this family drama about lousy parenting that adds nothing new to the world apart from a few clever lines (operative word "few"). However, I have a soft spot for selfish and childish parents who leave their children behind to "begin a new life" and "find themselves", only to be even more unhappy with their half lives. Meryl Streep is not bad at all, ok, not the film she will be remembered for, but good enough. Mamie Gummer is surprisingly good (all that anger!) and of course being Meryl's real daughter makes their scenes together even more believable. I also have to mention Ben Platt, who in this film shows that there are no small roles but small actors. I'd say don't go out of your way to watch this film, but don't blacklist it either. 7 years 9 months ago -

I cannot believe that Meryl Streep took this role. It was really boring, too much musical moments, awkward performance from Mery Streep!Actually the role did not fit her at all. Too bad........... 8 years 5 months ago
