THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ONWARDS SO READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.

The soundtrack and the animation are probably the only good things about this movie because once you look past them, you begin to notice that everything else is shallow and empty.

First, good worldbuilding entails setting up the rules and logic that said world is going to follow throughout the story. In Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime, the real world and the virtual world are supposed to mirror each other. And they do -- in the sense that the script doesn't care enough to present viewers with the rules and logic of either one! Example: why is Ryu deemed so dangerous in the virtual world? He is said to have fought with and defeated many of the animated avatars of people... so what? If their avatars die, do people die in real life? What is at stake here, really? Also, why does the justice police have the power to "unveil" characters' real life identities? Isn't that considered to be pretty much doxxing? How much time has passed since Bell became popular? Questions like these really ruined my viewing experience. Back to the real world: there is no logic to be found here either. How can you find someone's location based on a single live broadcast in mere minutes? IRL hundreds of reddit users team up to search for clues in similar situations and it often takes them weeks if not months to discover someone's location! Also, are the adults in the movie stupid? In what world is it okay to risk letting a teen girl travel all alone to another city in a different prefecture in order for her to stop two other children from becoming victims to domestic abuse and in doing so confront some random physically violent man without knowing anything about him??? The adults in the movie are a let-down.

Finally, character motivations and relationships DO NOT MAKE ANY SENSE. We only get a glimpse of the backstory of the main character (spoiler: her mom died and she's been depressed and closed off since then), and all we know about her is that she has a three-legged dog, likes to sign and she also feels awkward around her father. Coincidentally, her father only ever comes up to her to ask her what she wants for dinner. Like, this summarises 90% of his lines in the movie. We also know virtually nothing about MC's other friends: the guy she likes and her best friend. They're just there to assist her or to throw lines at her. The love interest just follows her around school and town asking her if she needs to talk. She ignores him and runs off each time. Great chemistry you got there, guys... And back to the virtual world, why is Bell suddenly interested in the Beast? They literally had only one random encounter before she starts chasing him around. There are some other minor characters who are weird but have insignificant contributions to the story.

Overall, all I can say is, it feels like this movie is missing a large chunk of the plot. Nothing in the virtual and real worlds makes sense and character motivations feel disingenuous to say the least. Do not recommend. Big letdown.
